In December, ARMA partnered with the University of Alberta to launch the Student Innovation Challenge: Used Oil Paper Filters, inviting students to think outside the box and to create a sustainable product or design using used oil paper filters.
The Challenge: Provide a market-driven solution that can be scaled up by industry and drive circularity in the market!
We were thrilled to receive entries from nine passionate student teams who brought creativity, technical skill, and a commitment to circular innovation. Congratulations to everyone who participated—and especially to our four winning teams!

Our product is Oil Drip Mats: Built from Oil, Built for Oil. We’re proposing a model built off of infrastructure that already exists and works; a product with a PLAN to be recycled again and again.

Our project is oil absorbent made from used filter paper that we call "Filt-Sorbent". Our project also compares the effectiveness of different methods for removing oil from filter paper.

SORT is all about the purification process. They propose that two wrongs can make a right with a novel partnership between two major industrial by products.

Congratulations again to all our participants. Your ideas are helping lead the way toward a world without waste. Together, we’re proving that with a little innovation, yesterday’s used oil paper filters can be tomorrow’s solution.
Stay tuned for our next challenge!
