Stewardship Recycling Program

Renewables Recycling

As renewable technologies become more common across Alberta, planning their end-of-life management is increasingly important. ARMA is working with the Government of Alberta, industry partners, and recycling experts to explore responsible recycling solutions for renewable energy products.

The recycling of renewables program will launch with the recycling of solar panels, with future phases expected to include electric vehicle (EV) batteries and wind turbine electrical components.

How To Recycle Your Solar Panels

Starting October 1, 2026, ARMA launches Canada’s first solar recycling program, the Electronics Recycling Program (Renewables) - Solar Panel.

When end-of-life solar panels are brought in for recycling, they are shipped to ARMA-approved Processors (recyclers). Registered Processors are private companies that have been audited and approved by ARMA.

Solar Panels that can be recycled in Alberta include:

Crystalline Silicon (c-Si) Solar Panels

  • Monocrystalline Silicon
  • Polycrystalline Silicon
  • Perovskite-Silicon tandem

Thin-Film Solar Panels

  • Cadmium Telluride (CdTe)
  • Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS)
  • Amorphous Silicon (a-Si)
  • Gallium Arsenide (GaAs)

This includes all panels used in residential, commercial, industrial, and utility use that are 1 square metre (m²) or larger.  For inquiries regarding the collection of end-of-life solar panels, please contact ARMA at renewables_claims@albertarecycling.ca or call 1.888.999.8762.

Albertans pay an environmental fee when they purchase new solar panels. These fees support the associated costs of recycling these materials. To learn more about the environmental fee for Solar PV, review our comprehensive list of products, definitions, and fees.
