Plug in and make a difference

So you want to be an electronics processor? That’s great news. Alberta can always use more innovative entrepreneurs willing to put their ingenuity to work to help the environment. But there are a few things you’ll need to know before you can become an approved processor.

Are you qualified?

There are certain requirements potential electronics processors must meet in order to become qualified and eligible to receive funding for end-of-life electronics collected and processed through Alberta’s electronics recycling program. All processors in the program must meet the standards set by Alberta Recycling.

All registered processors must ensure that electronic products are processed and recycled in an environmentally sound manner at facilities that meet all environmental, health, safety and any other requirements of all appropriate governing authorities.  All registered processors must continually:

  • Seek to reduce costs,
  • Improve services provided,
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, and
  • Strive to exceed industry standards.

All qualified processors must have both the ability and the capacity to fully recycle products and must accept full responsibility for end of life electronics once they are delivered.

All qualified processors must provide objective evidence that a number of requirements have been satisfied in the following areas:

  • Environmental Management
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Operations
  • Downstream processors
  • Transportation

Registered processors are eligible for financial incentives from Alberta Recycling based on the amount of electronic waste they collect and process. Separate incentives are available for both collection and processing. To be eligible for these financial incentives, registered processors in Alberta's electronics recycling program must meet certain criteria and have particular qualifications.
