Alberta’s Paint Recycling program, which has been in place since April, 2008 has proven much more successful than anticipated.  In the 2008/09 business plan, the initial target was to collect and process 1.5 million litres of paint.  That target was exceeded within eight months, and the program ended up recovering 1.9 million litres of paint (2.3 million Kg’s) by fiscal yearend at March 31, 2009.

With the significantly higher annual volumes, there is an increase in total processing expenditures that needs to be offset by higher revenues.  A proposal to the Environment Minister to amend the fee charged on the two larger container sizes to more accurately reflect our average cost to recycle a litre of paint has now been accepted. Effective August 1st, 2009, the new fees will be as follows. The new rates will provide the funding required to collect and process the higher volumes of paint being recovered in Alberta.

The new fee rates will become effective August 1st, 2009.
